Tehran on Saturday confirmed severance of ties with Morocco, saying the move by Rabat followed Iran's objection to the African state's biased stance in recent tensions between the Islamic Republic and Bahrain.
After Morocco's King Mohammed VI dispatched his foreign minister to Bahrain with a message of support for its ruler King Hamad bin Issa Al-Khalifa, Iran protested by summoning Rabat's envoy to Tehran.
Morocco's move Friday to end diplomatic relations with Iran came nine days after Rabat recalled its charge d'affaires to Tehran for consultations over what it termed "inopportune expressions."
Moroccan Foreign Minister Taieb Fassi Fihri summoned Iranian Ambassador to Rabat Vahid Ahmadi on Wednesday, and criticized Tehran's approach towards his country, saying Rabat was surprised at Iran's protest against Morocco's support and sympathy for Bahrain.
Meantime, Iranian foreign ministry also dismissed on Saturday Rabat's claims about Tehran's interference in Morocco's internal affairs as baseless and unfounded, expressing surprise at the kingdom's action in freezing ties with Tehran.
