Iran Arrests Gang of Rioters Attacking People in Disguise

TEHRAN (FNA)- Commander of the Basij (volunteer) forces on Monday announced identification and arresting of a gang of rioters who wore police or Basij uniforms to stir unrests and conduct operations of sabotage following the announcement of June 12 presidential election results.

Speaking in a forum on the outcomes of post-election events here in Tehran, Hojjatoleslam Hossein Taeb reiterated, "Joining the Basij is very easy and everyone can enter the Basij force very easily and perform ugly and unrighteous deeds with the aim of damaging the Basij face and changing the peoples' view about their offspring."

He further pointed to certain reports on the smuggling of different kinds of weapons and munitions into Iran by the opposition groups and foreign countries.

The commander reminded that any attack on Basij's headquarters or bases would certainly be repelled in any possible way since Basij is responsible for protecting the large cache of weapons it stores in its bases.

"Otherwise Basij would never arm its troops" (in such unrests).

Meantime, the commander underlined that Basij is just defending the country and the Islamic Revolution against those who seek to damage security and stability of Iran through armed clashes.

"Yet, in any way Basij will not confront the people who are dissatisfied and think they should defend their votes," he underlined.

After incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected as the next president of the country with over 62% percent of the votes cast in Iran's 10th presidential election on June 12, supporters of his main rival Mir-Hossein Mousavi - who rejected the results - took to the streets of Tehran and other cities in daily rallies.

But the Iranian police squad and Basij (mobilized volunteer) forces staged a strong presence last Saturday and Tehran has witnessed no demonstrations or unrests during the last week.
