Speaking to reporters here in Tehran, Ahmadi Moqaddam reiterated that most of the detainees have been released, and added, "Those who are still in detention have been sent to the public and revolutionary courts in Tehran."
He underlined that those with minor crimes would be released in the near future but others would face legal action.
Announcing that post-election violence killed 20 rioters, the General mentioned that the police has not lost anyone in the unrests, but "over 500 of its troops have been wounded".
Ahmadi Moqaddam further stressed that the police succeeded in controlling unrests with the least violence, and underlined, "The police behavior towards the illegal gatherings staged during the final days of unrests was completely legal."
After incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected as the next president of the country with over 62% percent of the votes cast in Iran's 10th presidential election on June 12, supporters of his main rival Mir Hossein Mousavi - who rejected the results - took to the streets of Tehran and other cities in daily rallies.
But the Iranian police and Basij (mobilized volunteer) forces staged a strong presence and ended weeklong demonstrations and unrests.
